藥理作用：  1. 抗菌抗病毒： 具有較廣泛的抑菌作用，但在體內能被蛋白質滅活[12]。體外試驗表明，有抗病毒活性，對牛痘和腺病毒抑制作用較強，其次為脊髓灰質炎Ⅰ型和副流感Ⅲ型病毒[13,14]。2. 抗蛇毒： 咖啡酸3微克劑量時能完全抑制20微克響尾蛇毒磷酸二酯酶，用作抗蛇毒劑[15]。3. 其它作用： 口服或腹腔注射時，咖啡酸可提高大鼠的中樞興奮性； 口服，可增加人胃中的分泌量，并能使脈搏變慢； 可增強子宮的張力，此作用可被所拮抗，而則不能影響； 可增進大鼠膽汁分泌[16]。有升高白血球、止血及滅活維生素B1等作用[17,18]。能抑制鼠腦組織勻漿脂質過氧化物的生成[19]。有縮短血凝及出血時間的作用[20]。4. 毒性： 小鼠腹腔注射LD50為1583mg/kg; 家兔靜脈注射14mg/kg/天，連續十天，其心、肝、功能及解剖鏡檢均未見病理變化
